Safety 1st Air Protect Car Seat : Review & Give-Away

Thursday, August 06, 2009

When shopping for a car seat, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Protection
2. Weight Limits
3. Ease-of-Use

Protection:
My primary concern would be the protection the seat provides. You see, over the past 20 years, the number of deaths related to front impact crashes has declined, but side impact crash fatalities have increased by 20 percent (from 31 to 51 percent), in part due to larger vehicles and higher speeds. Side impact collisions are among the deadliest type of collision for children, accounting for one in three child crash fatalities, nearly all of which are caused by head trauma.

Since side airbags that protect the head, chest and abdomen have reduced driver deaths by an estimated 37 percent, couldn't they do something similar for children. Well - that's what Air Protect thought.

Through the precise release of air, Air Protect™ shields children from side impact intrusion and immediately reduces crash forces at the most critical spot: around a child’s head. Air Protect™ does this by extending ride-down, the amount of time it takes to slow a child’s movement in a crash. Air Protect™ Technology has been designed to defend against the biggest threat to children on the road today; side impact collisions. The placement of Air Protect™ Technology on the car seat diverts crash forces away from a child’s head, the most vulnerable place in a side impact crash.
The experts at Safety 1st have put a lot of thought behind the design of the Safety 1st Air Protect. Check out this video.

Features At-A-Glance
  • Air Protect™ Revolutionary Side Impact Technology: Breakthrough system shields head and immediately reduces side impact forces through the precise release of air.
  • QuickFit™ Harness System adjusts harness height from the front in one easy step without uninstalling from the car.
  • Adjustable 5-position headrest easily accommodates a growing child.
  • One Click LATCH installation system allows for faster and easier installation when moving between vehicles.
  • 5-position adjustable headrest easily accommodates your growing child.
  • Removable cup holder.
Weight Limits:
Many people begin with an infant seat. Infant seats have a limited weight capacity and can only be used rearfacing. Convertible seats can be placed so that your child faces the back or front, but your child has to meet the minimum requirements before facing forward.

Why? Well, their necks and muscles aren't as defined or as strong as ours, so it is more dangerous and risks their lives if they are facing forward before they are ready. Some new recommendations have children sitting rearfacing until the age of 2!

With the Safety 1st Air Protect, your child can sit in it from 5 - 50 pounds. Considering my 3 year old is 27 pounds, that is a good long time! In the Safety First Air Protect, your child can sit rearfacing from 5 (newborn) to 45 pounds. (19" - 40" in height). For forward facing, the maximum limit is 50 pounds and 45". (My oldest son is 35.5 inches - so we have approximately 10 inches to go!)

Ease-of-Use:
If a carseat is easy to use, people are more likely to use it correctly. That means the less you have to take the whole thing apart to change shoulder straps the better. And the easier it is to snap in the car, the better.

Thankfully, the Air Protect is not a carseat that you have to take apart and unscrew to change harness heights or give your child a better fit. To loosen the harness, there is a harness release lever towards the front of the seat.

You can also change the front buckle position, although you do have to take the car seat out for this. But putting the car seat back in correctly is a snap, so no worries. But to change the front buckle, you just need to change the placement of the metal retainer - placing it through a new slot.

You want to ensure the harness height is correct for your child. With rearfacing, you want it even or just below the shoulders. With forward facing, you want it even or just above the shoulers. If you need to change the position of the harness height, you loosen the harness straps and then rotate the height adjustment levers inward. After that, lock it into place. There is a metal bar in the back to do so.

Installation:
Installation falls under ease-of-use. That's because it is easy to install this seat, especially if your car has the Latch System. But, you can install the carseat with a Latch Belt, Lap/Should Belt or Lap Belt. I love the new car seats that have the new Latch Connector. Instead of a clip that can be hard to maneuver under the car cushions, this connector makes it easier to attach the belt to the Latch System in the car.

The Safety 1st Air Protect is available in McKenna (Black/Grey) or Harvest (Brown/Orange). I have the Harvest and LOVE the colors. The MSRP is $249.99.

This is the first I have heard of the Air Protect Car seats.. Wow! I learned a lot. I am a Auntie.. no littles of my own. I do enjoy taking my nieces and nephews places and have a car seat.. I can tell you after reading about the Air Protect Car Seat my car seat is not near as safe.. I am almost scared to use it now.
I would love to win. (who wouldn't)
I really like that they have this air protection technology around the important part.. the Head.. that definitely needs protected on the littles during a accident.
    Thanks for the chance

Wow what an amzing concept: The placement of Air Protect Technology on the car seat diverts crash forces away from a child’s head, the most vulnerable place in a side impact crash.
I'm sure my carseat isn't anywhere close to protecting my daughters head like that.

I prefer this car seat because it would protect my son's head better with the Air protect system.

Wow this looks like awesome technology! I would love this car seat over others because it would be so much more safer in side impact collisions. I would feel better knowing their little head is protected by the air cushions built in around the head in case of impact!

I prefer this car seat over all others due to the extensive testing and rigorous standards the fols at Safety1 applied to this carseat. Because of the statistical data about baby head trauma and car seats, this car seat, to me, surpasses all others in safety.
